Swiss Bank FlowBank Declared Bankrupt by FINMA, CoinShares Impacted

Switzerland's financial sector was rocked by the recent bankruptcy declaration of FlowBank by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA). The regulatory body cited insufficient capital and concerns of over-indebtedness as reasons for initiating bankruptcy proceedings against the bank.

According to FINMA, the bankruptcy proceedings are aimed at safeguarding depositors, ensuring that privileged deposits can be fully repaid from the bank's available funds. FlowBank's inability to meet minimum capital requirements prompted FINMA to take decisive action to protect stakeholders.

CoinShares, a prominent player in the digital asset investment space, holds a substantial stake in FlowBank, approximately 30% ownership as of recent disclosures. This ownership stake was bolstered by CoinShares' acquisition of an additional 20.8% share in FlowBank in 2022, valued at CHF 24.74 million at the time.

FlowBank, founded in 2020 by Charles-Henri Sabet, had its banking and securities dealer license revoked by FINMA. The regulatory action effectively halted all commercial activities of the bank and prohibited any further banking transactions or securities dealings without approval from appointed liquidators.

The troubles for FlowBank trace back to October 2021 when FINMA first identified significant breaches of supervisory law, particularly related to capital requirements. Subsequent enforcement actions in October 2022 mandated corrective measures, including the appointment of an independent auditor to oversee compliance efforts.

In response to inquiries regarding FlowBank's bankruptcy, CoinShares declined to provide detailed comments, reflecting the sensitive nature of the situation.

As the fallout from FlowBank's bankruptcy unfolds, stakeholders and investors are advised to stay informed about developments. The impact on CoinShares and its broader implications in the financial markets are yet to be fully realized.
