Launched in 2014, the Estonian e-Residency program provides citizens of other countries with an opportunity to obtain a digital identity that enables remote access to Estonian public and private services. It allows entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world to set up and manage companies in the EU entirely online. To date, more than 110,000 people from 170 countries have become e-residents, registering over 33,000 companies in Estonia.
The goal of the program is to create an innovative business environment for global entrepreneurs, providing a positive economic impact for Estonia, including contributing to the country's economy, education system, and culture. The core values of the program include accessibility, transparency, and support for entrepreneurship, which contributes to building trust and Estonia's international reputation as a digital nation.
Upon receiving e-Residency status, users receive a smart card that allows them to securely sign documents, verify their identity online, and use Estonian e-government services. This includes the ability to register and manage a company, access banking and payment solutions, and submit tax returns online.
The e-Residency programme is part of Estonia's broader strategy for digital transformation and the creation of an innovative business environment that promotes entrepreneurship and strengthens the country's economy.
