Industry experts to explore opportunities for Islamic finance in the UK

London,  UK –IFN  UK  Islamic  Finance  Week  is  set  to  take  place  on  the 5thSeptember  2018 to welcome industry professionals at the Mansion House, London.

Organized  by  REDmoney events,  the  program  will  bring  together  a  lineup  of  speakers  comprising senior  industry  players,  decision-makers  and  regulators  to  explore  the  exciting  Shariah  finance opportunities  the  country  has  to  offer,  discuss  the  biggest  market  trends  and  debate  hard-hitting topics.

On the 5thSeptember, the event will kick off with welcoming remarks by Lord Mayor Charles Bowman, the mayor  of London. After two hard-hitting sessions on mega trends in Shariahfinance and Islamicreal estate investment opportunities in the UK, akeynote address will be delivered by John Glen, the economic secretary to the Treasury, HM Treasury. 

The first session will provide an overview in mega trends, global and regional  influencers for  Islamic Finance  and  Investment. This session  will be conducted by Bruno Martorano, the CEO of ADIB UK;Charles  Haresnape,  the  CEO  of  Gatehouse  Bank;  Lord  Mayor  Charles  Bowman;  Duncan  Steele-Bodger,  the  CEO  of  QIB  UK;  Marco  Lichtfous,  Partner,  strategy  and  operations  of  Delloitte  Tax  & Consulting and Nikhil Rathi, the CEO of London Stock Exchange. This session will be moderated by Stella Cox CBE, the managing director of DDCAP Group and Chair of TheCityUK. 

The second sessions will be on Real Estate and Investment in the UK. This session will be conducted by Adam Cavanagh, the CEO of Rosette Merchant Bank; Mark Hucker, the managingdirector of VG; Nicholas Judd, the founder and head of investment of 90 North Real Estate Partners; Pankaj Gupta, the co-founder  and CEO for  the UAE of Gulf Islamic Investments and Sarah Gooden, the partner of Trowers & Hamlins. This session will be moderated by Abradat Kamalpour, partner of Ashurst.

The  third  session  will  be  on highlights  and  opportunities  of Growth  and  Development  of Islamic Capital  Markets.  This  session  will  be  conducted  by  Ahmed  Choudhry,  senior  associate  of  Clifford Chance; Hitesh Asarpota, the managing director and head of Debt Capital Markets at Emirates NBD Capital;  Muhammad  Gunawan  Yasni,  the  member  of  national  Shariah  Board  at  the  Indonesian Council  of  Ulemas;  Najib  Al  Aswad,  the  director  of  IFAAS  and  Nitish  Bhojnagarwala,  the  vice president,  senior  credit  officer  in  Financial  Institutions  Group  at  Moody’s  Investors  Service. This session will be moderatd by Khalid Howladar, the managing director and founder of Acreditus. 

The  fourth  session  will  be  on  Liquidity  and  Supervision  of  Islamic  Financial  Institutions  in  Western Europe.  This  session  will  be  conducted  by  Amir  Firdaus,  the  treasurer  of  Al  Rayan  Bank;  Arshadur Rahman the manager in shariah compliant project at Bank of England; Mohamed Damak, the senior director  and  global  head  of  Islamic  Finance  at  S&P  Global  Ratings  and  Mohammad  Faiz  Azmi,  the executivechairman  at  PwC,  Malaysia.  This  session  will  be  moderatedby  Lawrence  Oliver,  the director and deputy CEO of DDCAP.

Following foursessions  on  Islamic  capital  markets  and  liquidity  issues, David  Korslund, the  senior economist of theGlobal Alliance for Banking on Values, will make a presentationon a hot topic in the Islamic banking world, particularly in Malaysia, namelyvalue-based intermediation and its place in the Islamic banking and finance industry.The fifth session  will be  on hard  issues of the Islamic Asset Management Industry. 

This session  will be  an  interview sessionand  the  interviewer  to  be  Tariq  Alrifai,  the  CEO  of  Quorum  Centre  and  the interviewee will be John Sandwick, the general manager of Safa Investment.

 Following session will be on all that glitters, gold. This session will be conducted by John Durham, the manager,  depository  of  Gold  Corporation  in  the  Perth  Mint;  Philip Judge,  the  CEOof  Physical  Gold Fund and Robin Lee, the CEO of HelloGold. This session will be moderated by Natalie Dempster, the managingdirector of World Gold Council. 

The  IFN  Fintech  Platform will  be  launched  and  followed  by  the  next  session  on  Fintech  and  Islamic Finance. This session will be conducted by Herve Larren, the co-founder of Global Crypto Ventures; Khalid  Howladar,  the managingdirector  and  founder  of  Acreditus; Nasir  Zubairi,  the  CEO  of  LHoFT and  Zeeshan  Uppal,  the  co-founder  of  Yielders.  This  session  will  be  moderated  by  Tom  Sleigh,  the UK country manager of Deposit Solutions.

 After  few  hard  hitting  sessions,  Abdulla  Al  Awar,  the  CEO  of  Dubai  Islamic  Economy  Development Centre, will be delivering a keynote address. Following on to the next session will be on Stewardship and Responsible Investing, opportunities for ethical and Islamic finance and investment. This session will be conducted by Catherine Howarth, the CEO of ShareAction; Kristina Alnes, the senior advisors of  the  Centre  for  International  Climate  Research;  Martin  Scheck,  the  CEO  of  International  Capital Market Association; Sean Kidney, the CEO of Climate Bonds Initiative and Wan Kamaruzaman Wan Ahmad, the CEO of Kumpulan Wang Persaraan. 

The final session will be on talking Islamicasset management and this session will be conducted by Alain  Verbeken,  the  director  of  financial  services  at  Mazars  Luxembourg;  Ali  Khokha,  the  senior manager  at  PwC;  Blake  Goud,  the  CEO  of  Responsible  Finance  and  Investment  (RFI)  Foundation; Michael Rainey, the partner of King & Spalding and Mohammed Al-Hassan, the co-founder and CEO-GCC and executive director of Gulf Islamic Investments.

After a series ofengaging sessions on various topics and issues making the rounds in the global and regional  Islamic  finance  industry,  the  main  event  of  the  day  will  conclude  with  a  talk  on the Islamic asset management industry and how the UK market can benefit from the opportunities presented by the asset class.

On  the  6thSeptember,  three  breakout  sessions  will  be  conducted.  The  first  session,  in  partnership with  Ashurst,  will  see  engaging  discussions  on  the  happenings  in  the  Islamic  real  estate  landscape,whereas the second and third sessions will discussIslamic fintech and investments respectively. 

The  sessionswill  convene  an  elite  group  of  the  industry’s  leading  Islamic  finance  practitioners  to discuss  and  analyze  the  benefits  and  concerns  facing the UK  Shariah  compliant  financing  and investment  market.  The  initiative  will  see  active  participation  from  local  regulators  and  industry practitioners and key international players.
