These include spot trading, margin trading, peer-to-peer margin funding (lending), over-the-counter (OTC) trading, and derivatives (where available). The exchange supports multiple major fiat currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, and JPY, as well as a wide selection of cryptocurrencies.
On the security front, Bitfinex leverages a layered security model: most user funds (around 99.5%) are stored in offline “cold wallets,” while withdrawals and active trading use only a small portion kept in “hot wallets” for liquidity. Users can enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) or hardware-based U2F keys, use withdrawal whitelisting, configure fine-grained API permissions, and benefit from DDoS protection. This infrastructure reflects an effort to respond to past security incidents and strengthen trust.
Nevertheless, Bitfinex carries a fraught history and several drawbacks. In 2016 the exchange suffered a major hack in which approximately 119,756 BTC were stolen — at the time one of the largest crypto thefts ever. As a result, Bitfinex reduced user balances by a proportional amount and issued recovery tokens, eventually reimbursing affected users by 2017. Despite improved security since then, this event continues to affect trust perception among some users.
Other criticisms include a relatively complex interface, which can be challenging for beginners, a steep verification process for fiat deposits or withdrawals, and occasional negative feedback about customer support responsiveness. Some features, like derivatives or OTC trading, may not be available in all jurisdictions.
In summary, Bitfinex remains one of the longest-running and most feature-rich crypto exchanges, offering high liquidity, advanced trading tools, and robust security measures. Yet, its troubled past, regulatory and regional limitations, and certain usability drawbacks require users to approach it with awareness and caution.
