Metaplanet expands Bitcoin holdings to 3,350 BTC, becoming Asia's largest corporate holder - IcoHolder.
Metaplanet has significantly expanded its Bitcoin holdings, adding 150 BTC to its treasury at an average price of ¥12.57 million ($80,000) per BTC, bringing the total to ¥1.886 billion ($12.1 million). This acquisition, announced in the company’s March 24 statement, increases Metaplanet’s Bitcoin reserves to 3,350 BTC, which were purchased at a total cost of ¥42.22 billion ($270 million). The average price per Bitcoin across these purchases stands at ¥12.60 million ($80,200), positioning Metaplanet as Asia's largest corporate Bitcoin holder.
The company has adopted a strategic approach to finance these acquisitions, utilizing stock acquisition rights through EVO FUND and zero-coupon bonds. In a bold move, Metaplanet redeemed ¥2 billion ($12.8 million) in bonds ahead of schedule in March, and raised an additional ¥2 billion ($12.8 million) through a new bond issuance. These actions have enabled the company to continue expanding its Bitcoin holdings without incurring debt with interest, a strategy that has garnered attention from both the financial and cryptocurrency sectors.
Metaplanet closely monitors its Bitcoin strategy with a key performance metric known as BTC Yield. This metric measures the increase in Bitcoin holdings relative to fully diluted shares. After a 309.8% rise in Q4 2024, the BTC Yield for the first quarter of 2025 has reached an impressive 68.3%. This growth is mirrored by a dramatic increase in Metaplanet’s stock price, which has surged by over 3,000% since the company began accumulating Bitcoin in April 2024.
In addition to its financial growth, Metaplanet continues to strengthen its leadership with strategic appointments. On March 21, the company announced the formation of a new advisory board, with Eric Trump, a figure with significant experience in real estate and finance, joining as its first member. Trump’s expertise is expected to support Metaplanet’s goal of becoming a leading Bitcoin Treasury Company. CEO Simon Gerovich highlighted that the advisory board will consist of influential figures dedicated to advancing Bitcoin adoption. While specifics about Trump’s role remain unclear, his appointment signals Metaplanet’s ongoing efforts to attract top-tier talent and expand its influence in the Bitcoin space.
