Pan-Africa Payment & Settlement System (PAPSS)

Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) is a financial market infrastructure designed to enable fast, secure, and affordable cross-border payments across African countries. The system was created to simplify the movement of money within the continent and support stronger economic integration among African nations. PAPSS was developed through a partnership between the African Export–Import Bank (Afreximbank), the African Union, and the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as part of broader efforts to strengthen intra-African trade.

Tentang Pan-Africa Payment & Settlement System (PAPSS)

The platform was officially launched in 2022 and represents an important step toward building a unified African financial ecosystem. PAPSS allows individuals, businesses, banks, and payment service providers to send and receive payments across borders quickly and efficiently. One of the main advantages of the system is that it enables transactions to be completed using local African currencies. This reduces the need for intermediary currencies such as the US dollar or euro and helps lower transaction costs for businesses and individuals.

PAPSS works by connecting commercial banks, central banks, and licensed payment service providers across the continent through a centralized digital infrastructure. When a payment is initiated, the system validates the transaction and routes it to the recipient’s financial institution. The beneficiary then receives the funds in their local currency. The platform is designed to operate with high levels of security, efficiency, and regulatory compliance while supporting real-time or near real-time settlements.

The system also plays an important role in supporting the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which aims to create a single market for goods and services across Africa. By simplifying cross-border payments, PAPSS helps businesses expand trade opportunities and access new regional markets. It also improves transparency and efficiency in financial transactions across borders.

In addition to facilitating payments, PAPSS continues to expand its ecosystem with new financial services and technological solutions. These include digital payment infrastructure, currency exchange mechanisms for African currencies, and additional tools designed to support cross-border commerce.

Overall, PAPSS represents a major advancement in Africa’s financial infrastructure. By enabling faster payments, reducing costs, and supporting regional trade, the system contributes to stronger economic integration and financial inclusion across the African continent.
