Tech, Payments and Regulation: a Harmonious Trio?
In this session we look at the trajectory of payments businesses adopting new technologies such as AI and DLT, and assess whether existing legal and regulatory frameworks are supportive or whether they give rise to frictions which mean that these businesses are unable to fully exploit new technologies. In particular, we ask (and seek to answer):
What might the world of payments look like in the future?
Does the existing regulatory framework help or hinder payments businesses in embracing that new world?
Payments regulation: where to from here?

What is the Role of Cryptocurrencies in the new Payments Landscape?
- Cryptocurrencies represent a move towards a cashless payment system with low transaction fees
- Cryptocurrency payments are much more secure than conventional online payment systems
- As the technology is better understood by the public, cryptocurrency payments will attract more users because the decentralized financial system creates a more transparent economic model
- One possible solution for mass popularization is to abate the fear of the volatility of cryptocurrencies by using fiat pegged coins (i.e. stable coins e.g. USDT), and/or calculating real-time price in fiat and then converting them to crypto at check-out points.
- Cryptocurrency payments will serve millions of unbanked people around the world
- In order for mass popularization of cryptocurrency payments, better compliance with KYC and AML regulations are needed
