Vitra was founded by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum in 1950 as a shopfitting company. In 1953, during a trip to the United States, Willi Fehlbaum encountered the work of Charles and Ray Eames, which inspired him to change the direction of the business. From 1957, Vitra began producing furniture under license from Herman Miller, including iconic designs by the Eameses and George Nelson.
The company has collaborated extensively with leading 20th-century designers such as Verner Panton, Jean Prouvé and Alexandre Girard, as well as with contemporary authors including Jasper Morrison, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Hella Jongerius and Antonio Citterio. These partnerships have resulted in furniture that combines functionality, aesthetics and durability.
Following a fire at the Weil am Rhein production facility in 1981, Vitra commissioned renowned architects to rebuild and expand the campus. Among them are Frank Gehry (Vitra Design Museum), Zaha Hadid (Vitra Fire Station), Tadao Ando (Conference Pavilion), Alvaro Siza and SANAA. These buildings have become architectural landmarks and symbols of the company's innovative spirit.
