Great Lakes Science Center, a prominent museum in Cleveland, Ohio, has begun accepting payments in Bitcoin as of November 13. This move shows how the museum embraces Bitcoin payments. Crain’s Cleveland Business (CCB), a local business news outlet, reported this new development.
This acceptance of Bitcoin comes just ahead of the inaugural Blockland Solutions Conference, set for early December. Kirsten Ellenbogen, the CEO and president of the museum, said in a statement, “Accepting Bitcoin is just a small part of the momentum to grow a blockchain ecosystem in Cleveland.”
The museum’s box office will use BitPay, a processor handling crypto payments, to manage visitor transactions. Ellenbogen framed the decision to accept Bitcoin as part of the institution’s commitment to cutting-edge innovations in math, technology, sciences, and engineering.
Museums Adopt Bitcoin Payments Trend
Elaborating on this fact, she stated that “Last year we launched our mobile app that uses augmented and virtual reality to allow guests to experiment with flames in space and test spacecraft designs re-entering Earth’s atmosphere when they visit the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, and now they will be able to use their phone to pay for their admission using Bitcoin.”
Great Lakes Science Center will not be the first to toe this path, however. According to SpendBitcoins USA, a directory listing retail merchants that accept payments in Bitcoins, St. Petersburg Museum of History in Florida and the Museum of the Coastal Bend in Texas are the two other museums in the US currently accepting digital currency from visitors.
This latest news from Ohio contrasts with recent comments by Jeff Garzik that claims Bitcoin is no longer used as a means of payment because investors prefer using it to store value. The crypto pioneer made his thoughts known a week after the 10th anniversary of Bitcoin. According to Garzik, “Whereas in the early days, developers were targeting getting merchants to accept Bitcoins, today the popularity of the digital currency as an investment asset predominates.”
