About Winamp

Digital service providers are the most widely used way for musicians to reach their audience, providing a standardized solution for them to release their tracks and monetize their music. The fact that a worldwide audience can be reached in this way is an obvious benefit of the 21st-century music industry – and of using a DSP. As a result of the dominance of DSPs, the role of the major recording labels has shifted away from music distribution and into a focus on publishing and master licensing instead.

In spite of this seeming democratization of the playing field, however, only a minuscule percentage of musicians are currently able to earn a living from their creative work. This is partly because the industry has been set up so that their share of the overall revenue generated by their creativity has been pitifully small. Our intention is to set this to rights by ensuring musicians are treated more equitably and receive a fairer proportion of the revenue.

Winamp Foundation
Winamp has opened its Foundation, with the goal to help musicians across the world create music they love. All funds collected by the Foundation are redistributed to charity projects supporting music and musicians. For the first initiative, we are raising money for musicfund.eu, a Belgian non-profit association that supports music schools and socio-artistic projects in conflict zones, developing countries, and Europe.

The Music Industry today
The music industry of the 21st century reflects the disruptive and forcibly transformational impact of the digital age and AI. The traditional income sources of musicians – live music performances and sales of music tracks – have declined enormously, so they have been forced to engage with the tech and the new interface it places between them and the music-loving public.
