A *starname is a name you can use. It can be your universal username for the blockchain world.
A *starname enables you to:
•Receive crypto-currencies.
•Log in to blockchain applications in a seamless way.
•Keep digital assets in an easily accessible manner.
•Transfer value in a fast, easy and cost-effective way.
The *starname basic edition is free.
The premium edition prices start at 70 IOV.
You can add different accounts to your *starname premium edition for just 1 IOV per account!
The fees support the work done by validators and *starname promoters helping to keep the service decentralized.
There are 2 simple ways to register for a *starname:
Via Starname Manager app. (Desktop)
Via Cosmostation wallet (Mobile app)
*starname basic edition:
This type of *starname ends with an open domain such as *cosmos, or *iov. It’s free and can be used by anyone who reserves one.
For example: veronika*iov / asif*iov / raul*cosmos / lina*cosmos / yourname*iov
*starname premium edition:
This type of *starname starts with * like: *elisabeth / *kim / *sasha / *juicebar / *bankofamerica
Premium starnames are used by a company or people who want to have an exclusive and personalized address. Once you own a premium *starname, you can add accounts to it like office*juicebar, merchandising*juicebar and assign them to different addresses.
For example: *mycompany / edward*mycompany / monica*mycompany
An open domain is a name that you are the owner and it can't be suppressed or modified. thewizard*iov is an example of an open domain: we can say it derives from *iov, but it can't be modified or managed by anyone else except the owner of thewizard*iov.
A closed domain is the name that the owner can manage and modify all the names derived from it. Example: from *juicebar you can have hr*juicebar, finance*juicebar and marketing*juicebar. All these names can be modified or suppressed by the owner of *juicebar.
About changing domains permissions from close to open and managing open domains: these are future features. There is still documentation and some features to be defined regarding open domains so, for now, we recommend you to register your *starname as closed.
All *starnames expire: basic and premium editions. Default expiration date for all *starnames, basic and premium, is one year from purchase. After the expiration date, all names have to be renewed and a renewal fee will apply.
Starnames sales and renewals are the main blockchain revenue, which is distributed to delegators and validators. The product fees are what allows the Starname (IOV) blockchain to revert to 0% inflation.
With our mobile partners, you will be able to send crypto-currency without the need for long complicated crypto-addresses, you will just need to type the *starname.
Our first mobile wallet integration was Cosmostation wallet. The app is a mobile app and can be downloaded on AppStore or GooglePlay. You can also use your starname on the Starname App, with Sputnik Network, and with Request Network.
The name service is built upon a Cosmos-SDK and functions as a decentralized chain agnostic name service, allowing anyone to personalize their crypto address and use one single address for all chains.
It’s based on Tendermint Bond-Proof-of-Stake (BPoS) Consensus.
