Steak ‘N Shake has announced that starting May 16, all of its outlets across the United States will begin accepting Bitcoin as a payment option. This move marks the fast-food chain’s latest step into the cryptocurrency space, providing its more than 100 million customers with the ability to pay for their meals, including its signature “original steakburgers and homemade milkshakes,” using Bitcoin.

The company had teased the idea of cryptocurrency payments earlier this year, and the official announcement confirmed that the transition to Bitcoin is now set in motion. With approximately 393 locations across the U.S., including a significant concentration in Florida, Steak ‘N Shake is set to become one of the more prominent chains offering digital currency options.

The company’s social media post also hinted that Bitcoin may just be the beginning, as it ended with a cryptic message, “The movement is just beginning…,” suggesting that other cryptocurrencies could potentially be accepted in the future.

Steak ‘N Shake’s decision to embrace Bitcoin payments follows a growing trend among U.S. fast-food chains adopting cryptocurrency as an alternative payment method. Notably, Chipotle partnered with digital payment provider Flexa in 2022 to accept payments in 98 different crypto assets across nearly 3,000 locations. Subway also experimented with accepting Bitcoin in certain franchises as early as 2013.

The announcement comes at a time when Bitcoin has seen significant growth, with its price surpassing the $100,000 mark in early May 2025, reinforcing the momentum of cryptocurrency in mainstream markets. As the digital asset continues to gain traction, more businesses may look to follow Steak ‘N Shake’s lead in offering new ways for customers to pay.
