Camino Network, Lufthansa Systems, and Swiss International Air Lines team up to explore blockchain solutions for revolutionizing the travel industry - IcoHolder.

The Camino Network Foundation, Lufthansa Systems, and Swiss International Air Lines have joined forces to develop groundbreaking blockchain solutions aimed at revolutionizing the travel industry. In a strategic move to accelerate innovation, the three organizations hosted a web3-focused hackathon in Frankfurt, bringing together top experts to explore ways blockchain and artificial intelligence can drive efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability in travel.

The event, which attracted teams from 13 different travel and tech companies, saw participants work intensively over 48 hours to craft practical solutions using the Camino Network blockchain. These solutions focused on improving the distribution of flight and travel products, tapping into emerging payment methods, and exploring innovative ways to offset carbon emissions.

Pablo Castillo, CEO of Chain4Travel and initiator of the Camino Network, highlighted the rapid progress achieved at the hackathon. “The event clearly demonstrated how connections that once took months can now be established in a matter of days. Compared to traditional distribution channels, the solutions developed here offer up to 98% cost savings and up to 50% improvements in sustainability,” he said, referencing the achievements of companies like Hotelplan and Carbify.

Among the standout presentations was the Unimoni team’s proposal to integrate 300,000 India-based travel agencies into the Camino Network. Additionally, the SWISS and Digital Hangar team unveiled a web3 travel identity solution, which integrates wallet technology and allows for the issuance of digital services such as vouchers.

The hackathon not only showcased the potential for blockchain in travel but also demonstrated how quickly and effectively it could be implemented. “It was impressive to see how the teams successfully integrated LHG flight content into their platforms within just two days,” said Mickael Woelcke, project manager at SWISS. “The commercial potential of these technologies is immense, particularly in streamlining partner integration and drastically reducing distribution costs.”

The next steps for the Lufthansa Group will involve evaluating which of the hackathon projects are suitable for pilot applications, with the goal of bringing these innovative solutions to the broader travel market.
